Local Water News: Commercial Street Water Project
Commercial Street Water Main Replacement
Notice to the Town
The bids were recently opened for the Commercial Street Water Main Replacement Project, and on January 23, 2012 the Board of Selectmen signed a contract for the first phase of the project. The award was given to Robert B. Our, Inc. the low bidder. The work will begin within two weeks. Please continue to check the Town web site for additional information.
As you recall from previous communication the Commercial Street project includes repaving, curbing and sidewalk replacement where needed, water main replacement, replacement of non compliant water services, and new drainage. The project is a complex task and requires detailed engineering to understand the intricacy of the utilities, water levels, and equipment lying under the street. To ensure a successful project that will minimize disruption, we have taken extra steps in the engineering drawings and planning for the new water main. This change caused a slight delay in the start of the project. Hopefully warm winter conditions will continue allowing the work to begin quickly. Continuing the Town's goal to minimize disruption and provide access to businesses while the work is being conducted, diligent efforts to communicate with you will continue.
This is the first phase of the project which will include water main replacement and new water services to each property from Freeman Street to the United States Post Office. If favorable weather conditions continue the majority of the work will be completed at the end of April with water connections being completed in mid-May. The Board of Selectmen has approved a working schedule through May 15. Phase two of the project includes the reconstruction of the street including new pavement, sidewalks, and drainage, which will begin in the late fall of 2012.
As mentioned in the past, the new technologies being used will help Provincetown manage stormwater run-off and beach impairments occurring at many of the outfalls using a porous paving material. The porous paving material will fully manage runoff from the highly used section of Commercial Street. Additionally, the work will include new curb and sidewalk repairs and replacement where appropriate.
A more detailed schedule will be available by the end of February 2012. The DPW and Contractor will provide regular updates, which will also be shared with the Banner and the Town web site, pertaining to specific sections of Commercial Street that are impacted. Our goal is to minimize disruption to residents and businesses throughout this process.
